About San Ignacio de Loyola Church/Manzana de las Luces
San Ignacio de Loyola is a Jesuit church at Bolívar 225 in the historic centre of Buenos Aires, and one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. It is part of the Manzana de las Luces, the Block of Enlightenment, a cluster of colonial buildings that once formed a centre of learning. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1942.
The story behind it
The Society of Jesus built the first church on this site in 1675. The Jesuits raised the present, larger church in the early 18th century, with work on the main building starting in 1712. They did not build only a place of worship. Around it grew a whole block that held a school, a library, a museum and administrative offices, which is how the area earned its name as a place of learning and ideas.
The block kept its role in education long after the church was built. Today it is still one of the best places in the centre to see how colonial Buenos Aires looked and worked, in a district that is otherwise mostly later buildings.
What to look for
- The stone facade facing Bolívar, with its pair of towers, is a good example of colonial church architecture in the city.
- The carved and gilded main altarpiece inside is the focal point of the church and rewards a slow look.
- The wider block around the church shows how the Jesuit complex was laid out, with several buildings sharing a single city block.
- The nearby streets have a mix of colonial and later buildings, so notice how the scale and style change within a few steps.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the church and its exterior, longer if you also explore the rest of the block.
- Check current opening hours before you go, as a working church can close for services and special events.
- The Plaza de Mayo, the Cabildo and the Casa Rosada are a short walk away, so it fits easily into a morning of sightseeing in the historic centre.
- Go earlier in the day for quieter streets and softer light on the facade.
See it on a quest
The Historic Buenos Aires quest brings you to San Ignacio on foot as one stop of a longer route through the old centre. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the building properly instead of just walking past. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
