About Stone Bridge
Stone Bridge is an 18th-century bridge on the High Street in Chelmsford, Essex. It stands at a river crossing that has been used for centuries, on the route between Colchester and London that shaped the town's growth. It also sits close to the story of Guglielmo Marconi, whose wireless company made Chelmsford famous.
The story behind it
The present bridge dates from the 18th century and replaced an earlier crossing that had stood here since the 12th century. People have been bridging the river at this spot for a very long time, and a Roman road linking Colchester and London ran close by. Chelmsford grew up because of where it sits between those two places.
That position matters for the Marconi story too. The town's closeness to London, together with relatively cheap land, is thought to be a leading reason why Marconi chose Chelmsford as the base for his wireless business. His name became widely known in 1912, when wireless distress calls from the Titanic brought ships to the rescue of the survivors. His technology was also used in the First World War to intercept enemy communications.
What to look for
- Look at the stonework of the bridge itself and think of the 12th-century crossing it replaced on the same spot.
- Look over the parapet at the water below, the reason a crossing was needed here in the first place.
- Notice how the High Street runs straight over the bridge, a reminder that this was always a busy route into the town centre.
- Look along the streets nearby for the mix of old and modern buildings that shows how the town grew from a small crossing point into a city.
Tips for your visit
- You only need five to ten minutes at the bridge itself, so treat it as one stop on a longer walk rather than a destination on its own.
- It is a public street, so it is free to see at any time, though daylight is best for looking at the stonework and the water.
- It is easy to combine with the rest of the town centre, with shops, cafes and the cathedral all within walking distance.
- Pavements near the bridge can be busy at peak times, so go early in the day or on a quieter weekday if you want a clear view.
