The experience

About this quest

A city in Scotland sae fair,
Once shrouded in smoke, wi' nae care,
But now it shines bricht, a new born light,
A city transformed frae day to night

Gone are the days of industry's dark toil,
In its stead, a city green and bright with foil.
Its focus on sustainability, an auld hearth aglow,
Makes Dundee a city of worth, nae doot ye kenIts people proud, an work in tandem,

For a better future, they do not condemn.
And so, Dundee, we raise a glass to thee,
For being a city baith green and fair to see

Is this for you?

Who it's for

Families with comic-loving children and visitors who want an easy look at central Dundee can meet Desperate Dan, Minnie the Minx and Oor Wullie on a 1.8 km walk from DC Thomson to the waterfront, with Robert Burns narrating in Scots verse. Allow around 100 minutes. Anyone who wants a live guide to question, or who finds rhyming Scots narration more tiresome than charming, should pick something else.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a self-guided walking tour of Dundee?
Yes. You play it on your phone with no guide and no group to join. The app leads you through 15 stops in the city centre and along the waterfront, from the comic statues to Discovery Point and the V&A, telling the story of each place and setting a puzzle there.
Where does the walk start and finish?
It starts at DC Thomson and finishes at HMS Unicorn on the waterfront, so it does not end where it began. On the way you pass the Robert Burns statue, Bruin the Polar Bear, the Mary Slessor commemoration, Discovery Point, the V&A and the Waterfront Gardens and Urban Beach.
How long does it take and how far is it?
Most players take around 100 minutes, so allow close to two hours including walking and puzzles. The route covers about 1.8 km, a relaxed pace through the city centre and down to the waterfront. You can start any time and pause, then carry on later.
Is it good for kids?
Children who know the comics tend to enjoy it, since the route visits statues of Oor Wullie, Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx as well as Bruin the Polar Bear. It suits school-age children happy to walk 1.8 km and look closely at statues to solve puzzles. It is free to play.
What if it gets cold or rainy?
The walk is outdoors, but you can pause the game whenever you like. If the weather turns cold, you can go inside to warm up at almost any location along the route, then continue from where you stopped. No attraction tickets are needed for any of the stops.
