Frequently asked questions

Was Black Jack a real pirate?
Yes. Black Jack Anderson was a sealer and pirate who based himself on Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago. The quest uses audio stories and puzzles at real places around Esperance to explore his history and the legend of his lost treasure.
Is this a guided tour of Esperance?
No, it is self-guided and played on your phone. The app leads you from stop to stop, tells the story of each place and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you. You can start any time, there is no group to join, and you can pause and continue later.
Where does the quest start and finish, and how long does it take?
It starts at the Whale Tail and finishes at Tommy Windich Grave, so it does not return to the start. Along the way you pass the Town Foreshore, Boat Jetty, Clock Tower and Train Tunnel. The 1.7 km route takes most players about 80 minutes, puzzles included.
Is it good for kids?
It is a family and kids' favourite, best suited to primary-school-age children. The puzzles are medium difficulty and solved using things you find on the street, with audio stories to keep younger players following the pirate mystery. Very young children may need plenty of help.
Can we play as a group, and do we need to book?
Yes, groups can play together, and the quest is free to play. There is no time slot to book: start whenever suits you, and pause and pick it up again later if you need a break. It is played outdoors, so dress for the weather.
