The experience

About this quest

You're seated in a quiet café in Lewiston when a woman in oddly formal attire approaches. High-collared blouse, fitted waistcoat, floor-length skirt—like she’s stepped out of a different century. “My name is Eliza Touchet,” she says. “Yesterday, it was 1973. Today, it’s your turn to help.”

So begins your journey into a strange case lost in time. Follow Eliza’s trail through the streets of Lewiston, solving real-world puzzles and uncovering secrets buried across generations. Who was the true heir? Why is this mystery resurfacing now—and what does she need from you?

This quest is more than a walk. It’s a thrilling investigation to explore with friends or family, build memories, and uncover the unknown—one clue at a time.

Is this for you?

Who it's for

Prospective students, visiting parents, returning alumni and current students get a fresh way to see the Bates campus: a 2.4 km puzzle walk from Ladd Library past Gomes Chapel, the Puddle and the Quad to Garcelon Field, chasing Eliza Touchet through the Tichborne Claimant mystery. Anyone hoping for a live guide to ask about admissions, classes or dorms should pick a regular campus tour instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can this be used as a self-guided tour of Bates College?
Yes, the whole route stays on the Bates campus. It takes in Ladd Library, Hedge Hall, Gomes Chapel, Pettengill Hall, the Puddle, the Quad, Commons, Roger Williams, Pettigrew and Garcelon Field. The app tells the story of each place and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you, so it is a mystery game rather than an admissions tour.
Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts at Ladd Library and finishes at Garcelon Field. In between, you follow the stops in order through Hedge Hall, Gomes Chapel, Pettengill Hall, the Puddle, the Quad, Commons, Roger Williams and Pettigrew. The full route is about 2.4 km on foot.
