Frequently asked questions

How do you walk from Tate Modern to Tate Britain?
The route starts at Tate Modern and follows the river via Blackfriars Railway Station, Gabriel's Wharf, the Southbank Centre, the London Eye and St Thomas' Hospital, then crosses to Big Ben, the Jewel Tower, the Buxton Memorial Fountain, Lambeth Bridge and Millbank Tower before finishing at Tate Britain. It covers about 4.5 km.
How long does the walk take?
Most players take a little under three hours, including walking and solving the puzzles at each stop. You can pause at any point and continue later, so it is easy to break the walk up with a coffee or a gallery visit.
Does it cost anything, and can we play as a group?
The quest is free to play. Friends or family can walk it together, following the app on a phone and working out the puzzles side by side, with no group to join and no guide to meet.
Do we need to book a start time?
No. You can start any time you like at Tate Modern, go at your own pace and pause whenever you want, picking up later where you left off. The quest ends at Tate Britain rather than back at the start.
Is it an outdoor walk, and what if it rains?
The route is outdoors along the Thames and through Westminster, covering about 4.5 km between the two galleries. In rain you can pause the quest and shelter, then carry on later, but dress for the weather as most of the time is spent outside.
