About Hotel Fauchère
Hotel Fauchère is a historic hotel at 401 Broad Street in Milford, Pennsylvania, a small town on the Delaware River in Pike County. Built in the 1880s by a Swiss-born chef, it is one of the best-known buildings on Milford's main street and still welcomes guests today.
The story behind it
The hotel takes its name from Louis Fauchère, a Swiss-born chef who had worked in the kitchens of Delmonico's in New York before settling in Milford. He built the hotel in the 1880s, at a time when the town was a popular summer retreat for city dwellers escaping the heat and looking for river and woodland scenery.
After many decades of changing fortunes, the building was restored and reopened as a boutique hotel with a restaurant and bar. Its long life as a place to eat, drink and stay is part of what ties it to the story of Milford as a getaway town.
What to look for
- The size and proportions of the building, which stand out among the smaller houses and shops along Broad Street.
- The Fauchère name on the signage, a reminder of the Swiss chef who founded the hotel.
- The neighbouring streets of Milford's historic centre, where many buildings date from the nineteenth century.
- The Pike County Courthouse, a short walk away on Broad Street, which shows how much of the town's civic life gathered around this same stretch.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 15 minutes to look at the exterior and the street, longer if you stop for a meal or a drink. Check current opening hours for the restaurant and bar.
- The hotel is a working business, so go inside as a guest or diner rather than expecting a museum visit.
- Early morning and late afternoon are pleasant for strolling Broad Street, when it is quieter and the light is softer.
- Combine it with a walk through the town centre, then head out to Grey Towers National Historic Site, the Pinchot family home just outside the centre, if you have time.
Explore it on a quest
Milford rewards walking, and the best way to take in the hotel and the streets around it is to follow a route rather than a map pin.
