About Fontaine du Soleil
In 1956, Nice unveiled a fountain featuring a 7-ton marble Apollo and five bronze mythological figures. Then something absurd happened. Citizens complained the crown on Apollo's head looked like a Renault 4CV car advertisement, and they wouldn't let it go. The sculptor took hammer and chisel to reduce the horses. The fountain was dismantled in the 1970s and disappeared for decades. In 2011, Apollo returned to his rightful place at Place Masséna, one of Nice's most iconic landmarks.
