The experience

About this quest

On a riverside stall you buy a worn 1953 book of poems. Tucked inside: café napkins, a dried violet flower, and notes in two different hands. They belonged to a novelist and a poet who spent thirty years in the cafés of Saint-Germain passing each other secret messages, and never once said the words out loud.

Follow their trail from Saint-Sulpice to the Pont des Arts, read the notes they left across the quarter, and put together the one letter he never dared to send.

Is this for you?

Who it's for

Book lovers and couples can follow a thirty-year secret romance through the cafés and bookshops of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, from Saint-Sulpice past Café de Flore to the Pont des Arts, reading old notes and piecing together one unsent letter. Anyone wanting a quick stroll or a live guide should look elsewhere: it is 2.9 km and about two hours of reading and puzzling on foot.

Frequently asked questions

Does the walk visit the Shakespeare and Company bookshop?
Yes. Shakespeare and Company is the third stop, reached after Place Saint-Sulpice and the Théâtre de l'Odéon. From there the trail continues to Le Procope and Rue de Buci, so the bookshop sits among several literary places on the route through the quarter.
Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts at Place Saint-Sulpice and finishes at the Pont des Arts, so it does not return to the start. On the way you pass the Théâtre de l'Odéon, Le Procope, Café de Flore, Les Deux Magots, Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Place de Furstemberg and the riverside bouquinistes.
How long does it take and how far is the walk?
Most players take about two hours, walking and puzzles included, and the route covers 2.9 km through Saint-Germain-des-Prés. You can pause at any point, stop for a coffee at one of the cafés on the way, and continue later.
Do we need to book a time or join a group?
No. You start whenever you like on your phone, with no group to join and no guide to meet. The quest is free to play, so friends or couples can simply set off together from Place Saint-Sulpice and go at their own pace.
