O Swan Hotel
The Swan Hotel is a historic timber-framed inn on the High Street in Lavenham, Suffolk, a village famous for its wonky medieval buildings and its wool-trade past. It is a working hotel and bar, so it is a place to look at and also to step into. It makes an easy landmark to build a walk around.
The story behind it
Lavenham grew rich on cloth in the late Middle Ages, and much of the High Street still has the leaning, half-timbered look of that period. The Swan belongs to this streetscape and has served travellers and locals for a very long time. In the Second World War, American airmen stationed at the nearby Lavenham airfield are remembered as regulars at the Swan, and the hotel has long kept that connection alive.
The Swan also has a more mischievous tale. According to a story told on local walks, the international drug smuggler Howard Marks was arrested here in 1980. It is a reminder that even the quietest corner of Suffolk has had its moments of drama.
What to look for
- Look at the timber frame and the uneven lines of the walls and roof, which show how the building has settled over the centuries.
- Notice how the Swan sits in the long run of crooked, colourful buildings along the High Street, each leaning at its own angle.
- Find the hanging pub sign above the entrance, which marks the Swan as a place with a long history of welcoming guests.
- Inside, if you pop in, look for the wartime memorabilia linked to the American airmen who once drank here.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes to look at the building from the street, longer if you stop for a drink or a meal.
- It is a working hotel with a bar, so you can usually go in, but check current opening hours and whether the bar or restaurant is open to non-residents.
- Early morning or late afternoon is the best time for photographs, when the High Street is quieter and the light is softer on the timber.
- The Market Place and the medieval Guildhall are a short walk away, so the Swan fits neatly into a wider stroll around the village.
See it on a quest
Lavenham Highlights takes you to the Swan on foot as one stop on a longer route through the village. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in what is in front of you, so you look harder at the crooked frames and street corners than you would on your own. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
