Couples and history-minded visitors, many on a day trip from Rome, who want medieval Viterbo at their own pace. As Raniero Gatti, Captain of the People, you solve clues to save the first conclave on a 1.6 km walk past San Pellegrino to the Popes' Palace, in around 90 minutes. Anyone wanting a live guide, or visiting after dark, should choose something else, as this route is best in daylight.

What is the City of Popes quest in Viterbo about?
You play Raniero Gatti, Captain of the People of Viterbo, racing to save the first conclave from an ominous threat. Along the way you solve clues in the streets, see sights such as the Palazzo dei Papi, and learn about the symbols, history and ruling families of the town.
Is this a self-guided medieval Viterbo tour, or do I need a tour guide?
No guide is needed. The app leads you from place to place on your phone, tells the story of each stop and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you. You can start whenever you like, with no group to join and no fixed tour time.
Where does the route start and finish, and how long does it take?
It is a 1.6 km loop that starts at Piazza della Morte and finishes at Piazza San Lorenzo, close to where you began. Stops include Piazza San Pellegrino, Palazzo Gatti, Piazza Fontana Grande, Piazza del Plebiscito and Palazzo Farnese. Most players take around 90 minutes, walking and puzzles included.
Can we play as a couple or a group, and do we need to book a time?
One ticket covers the whole group playing together, so couples and friends can share it. There is no time slot to book: start when it suits you and pause to continue later. The route is open around the clock, though it is better during daylight hours.
