About Santa Barbara Mission
Santa Barbara Mission is a Spanish Franciscan mission founded in 1786 on a hillside above Santa Barbara, California. Often called the Queen of the Missions for its twin bell towers and classical facade, it is the tenth of California's 21 missions and still serves as a working parish church.
The story behind it
The mission was founded by Father Fermín Lasuén of the Franciscan order and dedicated to Saint Barbara. It was built on land of the Chumash people, whose labor and skills shaped the buildings, the water system and the surrounding fields. Several churches stood on the site over the years, and earthquake damage in 1812 led to the building of the larger stone church that was finished in 1820 and is the core of what you see today.
When the Mexican government secularized the missions in the 1830s, most were abandoned or sold. Santa Barbara was different: Franciscans have lived here ever since, which makes it one of the few missions with an unbroken religious community. A strong earthquake in 1925 damaged the church badly, and it was rebuilt and restored afterwards.
What to look for
- The front of the church has two matching bell towers and a classical porch of columns under a pediment, a design that sets it apart from the plainer facades of other California missions.
- In front of the church, look for the old stone fountain and the lavanderia, the basin once used for washing, which reflect the water works built here in the early mission years.
- The cloister garden and the museum rooms hold mission-era objects and give a sense of daily life in the community.
- From the front steps, the view runs down across red-tiled roofs to the city and the Pacific, a good way to understand why the site was chosen.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour for the church, museum and gardens, longer if you like to read every display.
- The church is an active parish, so be quiet during services and check current opening hours and visiting arrangements before you go.
- Morning light on the facade is soft and the grounds are calmer, which suits photos and a slow look around.
- The Mission Rose Garden across the street and the quiet residential streets nearby make an easy extension to your walk.
