We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Sydney

In Sydney a class can move from city squares to convict docks in one day. CBD quests start at the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the State Library; harbour quests wind through The Rocks and the wharves of Circular Quay; others run on Cockatoo Island, along the South Head cliffs at Watsons Bay and in colonial Parramatta. For Years 6 to 8, Convict Life Sydney: Escape from Cockatoo Island and Highlights of Sydney: From Prison to Freedom Land put the convict colony in front of students; for Years 3 to 6, The Oz Escape in Sydney works well among CBD statues and squares. Quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s need one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18 follow school policy.

  • Getting around

Transport for NSW offers no group ticket; each student and adult taps their own Opal card on trains, buses and light rail, and over-16s carry a school concession card.

  • Toilets

Free, mostly accessible public toilets are at Town Hall Square, Martin Place and in the Domain, though some keep office hours.

    MoreLess

Stations and free museums are reliable fallbacks.

  • Lunch

Hyde Park, split by Park Street into north and south sections, and the Royal Botanic Garden are the usual picnic spots.

    MoreLess

Hyde Park gets busy at weekends; take all rubbish with you.

  • Wet weather

The Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of NSW both have free general entry, with fees only for some exhibitions.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: George Street is pedestrianised but shared with light rail from Circular Quay to Central. Keep teams off the tracks and watch for trams when crossing.

What they learn

History

Colonial New South Wales and the convict era, through the Convict Precinct on Cockatoo Island and The Rocks (Cadmans Cottage, Campbell's Stores, Garrison Church, the Hero of Waterloo); early colonial government at Parramatta (Old Government House, Old Kings Parade Ground); the Victorian-era Queen Victoria Building; maritime history at South Head with the wreck of the Dunbar and its lighthouses; war memorials (the Cenotaph, the Boer War Memorial in Parramatta).

Geography

Urban geography of a harbour city, from the shipbuilding docks on Cockatoo Island to the Walsh Bay piers, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour; map reading and orientation as teams find their own way between stops on routes of 1 to 5 km.

English and languages

Close reading of instructions, story text and clues; Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses in Sydney can be played in French or Spanish for primary language classes.

Civics and citizenship, and teamwork

Sharing roles within a team (navigator, reader, timekeeper), agreeing on answers together, and moving safely and courteously through busy public spaces.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Sydney

Which quest suits which year group?
For Years 3 to 6: The Oz Escape in Sydney, The Oz Escape: A Wicked Glitch and the Botanic Gardens quest. For Years 6 to 8: Convict Life on Cockatoo Island, Highlights of Sydney: From Prison to Freedom Land and Historic Parramatta. For Years 9 to 12: Sydney Shadows: The Ghost of the QVB, the Watsons Bay Dunbar shipwreck walk and the murder mystery in The Rocks.
How long does a quest take?
Most Sydney quests take about 1.5 to 2 hours on foot over 1 to 5 km. Historic Parramatta is the shortest at about 1 hour 20 minutes; Convict Life on Cockatoo Island and Highlights of Sydney: From Prison to Freedom Land take about 2 hours. Add ferry time for Cockatoo Island and Watsons Bay, plus a buffer for toilets and regrouping.
How many students share a phone, and do they need accounts?
One phone per team of 3 to 5 students, either a teacher's or a student's, so a class of 30 needs 6 to 10 phones. Students do not need accounts and nothing has to be installed on their own phones; only the team phone runs the quest.
Do the phones need mobile data?
Each team phone needs mobile data during the quest, or the quest downloaded beforehand over wi-fi. Downloading at school the day before is the safest approach, especially for international groups without local data plans. Charge phones fully and give each team a power bank.
How much does it cost?
5 euros per student; teachers and supervising adults are free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and preview any quest from home for free before the excursion. Public transport is separate: every student needs an Opal card with enough credit for trains and ferries.
What happens if it rains?
Replay the quest free on another day within 30 days. On the day itself, move indoors: the State Library of NSW on Macquarie Street has free exhibitions, the Art Gallery of NSW in the Domain has free general admission, and the MCA at Circular Quay is free for under-18s and Australian students.
Where do we start, and do we need to book?
Each quest has its own start: the Cenotaph in Martin Place, the State Library or the Morshead Fountain opposite it, Customs House or the Commissioner's Steps at Circular Quay, Cockatoo Island Ferry Wharf, or the Rumsey Rose Garden in Parramatta. There is no booking slot, but Cockatoo Island asks schools to register self-guided visits in advance.
