We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.
Perfect with a group of A Level pupils. Loved it.
Quests for classes
Utrecht is compact enough for a class to cover the medieval centre on foot in a morning, with the Dom Tower as a landmark every team can steer by. Questo's school quests run from Utrecht Centraal and Stationsplein through the old centre to the Dom, Janskerk, Pieterskerk, the Oudegracht wharf cellars and the Centraal Museum. For Key Stage 2, Bike Gone Missing starts outside the station and ends at the Miffy statue. Key Stage 3 classes suit the Utrecht Monster Mystery Escape Game from Museum Speelklok, rated 4.4 from 1,450 ratings. Older pupils can play Utrecht Under Dark Magic around Pieterskerk and University Hall. Ages 8 to 18 are covered.

Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone.
For under-14s, place one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; for 14 to 18, follow your school's policy.
The centre is walkable: Domplein is 8 to 10 minutes on foot from Utrecht Centraal.
U-OV buses and trams (Transdev) sell no tickets on board, and every pupil aged 12 or over needs their own.
Public toilets are scarce, and the pop-up street toilets on Janskerkhof are only up from Thursday to Sunday.
Plan stops at Bibliotheek Neude, a museum or a cafe, asking staff first.
Park Lepelenburg, on the edge of the old town, is the usual picnic spot with open lawns; Wilhelminapark is a larger alternative.
Leave no litter behind and keep teams together while eating.
Bibliotheek Neude, the former main post office, is open to all; the Centraal Museum is free for under-18s; Hoog Catharijne gives a covered route.
Rained off? Replay the quest free within 30 days.
Caution: The cycle paths at Vredenburg and Smakkelaarsveld, beside the station, are the busiest in the Netherlands. Teach teams to check for bikes before stepping off any kerb and never to wait on cycle lanes.
Medieval Utrecht as a church city, through the Dom Tower, Domplein, Janskerk, Pieterskerk, Geertekerk and the Duitse Huis. Domplein itself began as a fortress before it became a religious centre. Younger pupils meet medieval town life at the city castle, the Great Medieval Barn and the wharf cellars.
Urban geography of a canal city, from the station and the Moreelsebrug to the Singel ring of canals and the two-level Oudegracht wharf cellars. Pupils practise map reading and orientation over routes of 0.9 to 3.8 km, using the Dom Tower as a fixed landmark.
Pupils read the story and puzzle instructions in English, or play in the class's target language. The Monster Mystery is available in French, German and Spanish, and Bike Gone Missing also in Italian, Polish and other languages.
Sharing public space safely in a city built around cycling, and using public places such as the library, squares and church gardens with respect.

In short
A school trip to Utrecht with Questo is a self-guided city quest. Pupils in teams of 3 to 5 follow a route of 7 to 13 stops on foot, solving a puzzle at each, in 60 to 90 minutes. 3 quests suit classes aged 8 to 18. There is no guide and no time slot: the class starts when it arrives. The price is €5 per pupil, and teachers play free.
Pupils are an estimate: groups of four or more teams starting one quest together, at about four pupils a team, across all cities since 2018. Ratings are from players of these quests.
In a randomised study of 10,912 students, a single cultural trip raised critical thinking, tolerance and interest in culture weeks later.
458 Amsterdam pupils walked the medieval city in teams, solving tasks on phones at real locations. They learned more than classmates taught the same topic in lessons.

Across hundreds of studies, game-based learning beats non-game teaching on knowledge and retention; story and playing together are what make the difference.
