Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Vienna

A school day with Questo in Vienna mostly happens on foot in the Innere Stadt, between Stephansdom, the Hofburg, the State Opera and the Rathaus on the Ringstraße, with separate routes in the Schönbrunn palace park and at the Wurstelprater in the Prater. For Key Stage 2, Escape the Great Plague: A Medieval Vienna Mystery is the most played route, about 50 minutes from Ruprechtsplatz, and Saving the Empress turns Schönbrunn into an escape game. Key Stage 3 groups suit Espionage in Vienna: The Secret Order, two hours from the Rathaus. Quests cover ages 8 to 18, up to sixth form.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone; under-14s need one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints, 14 to 18 follow school policy.

    MoreLess

Graben and Kärntner Strasse are pedestrianised.

  • Getting around

The Innere Stadt is compact: Stephansplatz to the State Opera is about 10 minutes on foot.

    MoreLess

Wiener Linien runs U-Bahn and Ring trams; under-15s ride free on Sundays, public holidays and Vienna school holidays.

  • Toilets

City-run public toilets cost around 50 cents, including the Opernpassage underpass by the State Opera and the historic Graben toilets.

    MoreLess

Have coins ready; museums and larger U-Bahn stations are fallbacks.

  • Lunch

Burggarten, Rathauspark and Stadtpark have benches and lawns for packed lunches; Volksgarten lawns are often roped off.

    MoreLess

Vienna's Waste Watchers fine people for dropping litter, so bag everything.

  • Wet weather

Wien Museum's permanent exhibition on Karlsplatz is free, and federal museums such as the Natural History Museum and Kunsthistorisches Museum admit under-19s free.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: The Ringstrasse has a busy cycle path running beside the pavement, often marked in red. Pupils should watch for bikes and trams when crossing, especially near the Opera and Parliament.

What they learn

History

Plague and the medieval city (Stephansdom, Stock im Eisen, the Basilikenhaus, Griechenbeisl). The Habsburg monarchy through the Hofburg, the Swiss Gate of the Imperial Treasury, the Maria Theresa and Prince Eugene statues, the Kapuzinerkirche and Schönbrunn. Baroque Vienna at Karlskirche and the Plague Column on the Graben. Vienna around 1900 through Freud, the University and the coffee houses.

Geography

Urban geography of a historic centre, from the narrow lanes of the old town to the monumental Ringstraße buildings and the Baroque layout of the Schönbrunn park. Map reading and orientation on routes of 1.8 to 5.2 km.

English and modern languages

Reading and following written instructions under time pressure. Escape the Great Plague can be played in German, French, Spanish, Italian or Dutch, and Espionage in Vienna in German, French, Spanish or Dutch, so a languages class can play in the language it studies.

Citizenship and teamwork

Sharing one phone, splitting roles (reader, navigator, puzzle solver), agreeing answers and keeping to checkpoints and meeting times.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Vienna

Which Vienna quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11): Escape the Great Plague in the old town, Saving the Empress at Schönbrunn or the Wurstelprater quest in the Prater. For Key Stage 3: Espionage in Vienna or Freud, Beethoven & Mozart. For older pupils and sixth form: Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Vienna or In the footsteps of Freud.
How long does a quest take?
Escape the Great Plague takes about 50 minutes for 2.6 km, and Saving the Empress about an hour for 3.6 km. Freud, Beethoven & Mozart takes about 1 hour 40 minutes for 4.1 km, and Espionage in Vienna about two hours for 5.2 km. With a whole class, allow an extra 15 to 30 minutes for starts, toilets and regrouping.
How many pupils share a phone?
One phone per team of 3 to 5 pupils. It can be a staff phone or a pupil's. A class of 30 makes 6 to 10 teams, which start a few minutes apart so they do not crowd the same stop. Pupils do not need their own accounts.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
Escape the Great Plague starts at Ruprechtsplatz in the old town. From Stephansplatz (U1 and U3), Freud, Beethoven & Mozart starts right at the cathedral. Saving the Empress starts at Schloss Schönbrunn, reached on the U4 to Schönbrunn. The Wurstelprater quest is next to Praterstern (U1 and U2, trams O and 5).
What does it cost per pupil?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones are free, so a class of 30 costs 150 euros. You can pay by card or by invoice, there is no booking slot, and you can preview the whole quest free from home before the trip to check the route and content.
What if it rains on the day?
You can pause the quest and continue later, or replay it free within 30 days if the weather ruins the day. The Wien Museum on Karlsplatz makes a good indoor fallback: its permanent exhibition on the city's history is free, and its special exhibitions are free for under-19s.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
No pupil accounts are needed. Each team's phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on Wi-Fi at your hotel or school. Charge phones fully and bring a power bank, especially for the longer routes such as Espionage in Vienna.
