About this quest

A researcher vanished. A lineage erased. A trail of secrets hidden in stone and stitch.

Decode Sinéad’s notes, uncover the fate of Wells’ civic prisoners, and trace a forgotten Burgher family through cathedral carvings, heraldic shields and hidden symbols.

From Vicars’ Close to St Cuthbert’s, every clue brings you closer to the truth.

But someone is watching. And you’re next.

Is this for you?

Who it's for

Families with school-age children and puzzle-loving day-trippers will spend around an hour and a half decoding a vanished researcher's notes, reading cathedral carvings, heraldic shields and hidden symbols on a walk from Wells Cathedral to St Cuthbert's. It sits neatly alongside a Cathedral or Bishop's Palace visit. The 1.5 km outdoor route carries a mildly sinister thread about civic prisoners, so anyone wanting a live guide to question should pick something else.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts at the stop called No one home and finishes at St Cuthbert's, so you end somewhere different from where you began. Along the way you pass the Sun Clock, Wells Cathedral, the Market Place fountain, the Bishop's Palace drawbridge, Royal Park, the Bandstand, the Barn, Guardhouse Lane and the City Arms Prison.
How long does it take and how far do we walk?
Most players take around an hour and a half, including walking and solving the puzzles. The route covers about 1.5 km through central Wells, so it fits comfortably into a day that also includes the Cathedral or the Bishop's Palace.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, it is tagged family friendly, and the puzzles are solved by looking at real carvings, shields and symbols around you, which suits school-age children who enjoy codes. The story has a suspenseful edge, with a missing researcher and the fate of the city's prisoners, so younger children may want an adult reading along.
Do we need to book a time or pay to play as a group?
No. The quest is free to play, and there is no group to join or guide to meet. Everyone opens it on a phone and starts whenever suits them, so friends or a family can simply walk it together at their own pace.
Can we pause it, and what if it rains?
You can pause at any point and continue later, which helps if you want to stop for lunch or step inside the Cathedral. The route is walked outdoors between stops, so bring a coat on a wet day or save it for a drier spell.
