Über Norman Tower

The Norman Tower is a Romanesque stone gateway in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, built as the great entrance to the town's powerful medieval abbey. It has survived the abbey's destruction and still stands beside the cathedral, working as a bell tower. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved buildings in the town.

The story behind it

The tower dates from the early 12th century, when the Benedictine abbey of St Edmund was one of the richest and most important religious houses in England. It served as a gateway between the town and the abbey's great church, so pilgrims and townspeople passed beneath it on their way to the shrine of the martyred king Edmund.

In 1539 Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries brought the abbey to an end, and most of its buildings were pulled down or left to decay. The gateway survived because it found a new use as the belfry for the neighbouring church of St James. That church became a cathedral in the 20th century, and the old gate tower still serves it today.

What to look for

  • The round-headed arches typical of Norman building give the tower a solid, heavy look that is very different from the pointed Gothic style of later medieval churches.
  • The dark, weathered stonework of the tower shows how much of the original structure has lasted since the abbey's heyday.
  • Looking through the gateway passage gives you the same kind of approach that visitors to the abbey would once have had, with the churchyard opening up beyond.
  • The neighbouring cathedral stands right beside the tower, so you can see how a gate from one age came to be part of a very different church.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 10 to 15 minutes to look at the tower itself, longer if you combine it with the cathedral and the gardens.
  • Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the stonework, and the area is usually quieter early in the day.
  • The Abbey Gardens and the ruins of the abbey church are a short walk away, as is the later Abbey Gate.
  • You can see the tower from the outside as you pass; for access to the interior or the bells, check current opening hours and arrangements with the cathedral.
