Über De Nieuwe Molen
De Nieuwe Molen is a stop on Mill Street in Stellenbosch, South Africa, that recalls the milling history of one of the country's oldest towns. A mill wheel statue and its plaque mark land that once belonged to the old mill square, a reminder of how the early settlement fed itself.
The story behind it
The miller was most probably the town's first public industry. Within a decade of Stellenbosch being founded, residents asked for a local water wheel to grind their wheat. Without one they faced a day trip to Cape Town every time they needed flour. Several mills followed over the years, but all were eventually demolished and many of their original details have been lost.
The land for a mill square, the Meulplein, was granted in 1749, and the Mill Wheel Statue stands on part of that ground. Local rumour says the town's young people once held dances in the old mill there, moving between the sacks of wheat. Treat that as a story passed down rather than a documented fact, but it gives the spot some life.
What to look for
- The mill wheel statue itself, a physical reminder of the machinery that once drove daily life in the young town.
- The plaque beside the statue, which explains the link to the old mill square and the land granted for it.
- The open field known as Die Braak, which lies on your right as you stand at the plaque facing the statue.
- The street name itself: Mill Street carries the memory of the trade even though the original mills are gone.
Tips for your visit
- Give it ten to fifteen minutes. It works best as one stop in a longer walk through central Stellenbosch rather than a destination on its own.
- Read the plaque first, then look across to Die Braak to picture how open the surroundings once were.
- Morning or late afternoon light is the most pleasant for strolling the shaded streets of the old town.
- Because the original mills no longer stand, there is no building to enter here. Check current opening hours for any museums or venues you plan to combine it with.
See it on a quest
You can reach De Nieuwe Molen on foot as one stop of Failed art heist in the City of Oaks, Stellenbosch. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, then sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so the plaque and the statue become part of the game rather than something you walk past. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no schedule.
