Your phone leads you on foot through the historic sites of Cannery Row: Pacific Biological Labs, the Cannery Worker Mural, the Cannery Worker Shacks, the Intertidal Boardwalk, Monterey Canning Company and Steinbeck Plaza. It tells the story of each place, following John Steinbeck and Doc Ricketts. There is no guide and no group to join.

In a way. At each stop the app sets a puzzle or riddle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely at the murals, shacks and buildings to find answers. It is framed as a mystery spun off from Cannery Row rather than a list of items to collect.

The walk starts at Pacific Biological Labs and finishes at Steinbeck Plaza. It covers about 0.5 km, and most players take around 40 minutes, including walking and solving the puzzles. That makes it easy to fit in before or after other plans on Cannery Row.
