À propos de cette aventure
Not long after Germany invaded the Netherlands in May of 1940, the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam was closed off from the outside world. Until Canadian forces liberated the city five years later.
Only very few of the inhabitants who were living there at the beginning of the War ever returned from the camps. However, the Plantage neighbourhood, instead, is known primarily for its stories of resistance.
What was it like on the day the Canadians finally arrived and the city was liberated?
Est-ce pour vous ?
Pour qui c'est
WW2 history readers and visitors planning a stop at the Resistance Museum or the Holocaust Names Memorial get the Plantage story of occupation, deportation and resistance, told at the places where it happened, over a 1.6 km walk that takes close to two hours. Families with young children may prefer something lighter, since stops like the Dutch Theatre deportation centre and the Auschwitz Memorial deal directly with the camps.

Questions fréquemment posées
Where does this Amsterdam WW2 walk start and finish?
It starts at The Dock Worker statue and finishes at the Botanical Gardens, so it is not a loop. Along the way you pass the Holocaust Names Memorial, the Dutch Theatre, the Resistance Museum, Henri Polaklaan and Wertheim Park, 12 stops over about 1.6 km.
How long does the walk take?
Most players take close to two hours, including walking and solving the puzzles. The distance is only 1.6 km, so most of the time goes on the stories and puzzles at each stop. You can pause at any point and continue later.
Is it suitable for children?
The story covers the occupation, the deportation of Amsterdam's Jewish residents and the camps, with stops at the Dutch Theatre deportation centre, stumbling stones and the Auschwitz Memorial. It suits older children with an interest in history; parents of younger children should judge whether the subject is right for them.
Can we play as a group, and do we need to book a time?
Yes. One ticket covers the whole group playing together on a phone. There is no guide and no group to join, so you do not need to book a time slot; start whenever suits you.
What if the weather is cold or wet?
The route is outdoors through the Plantage neighbourhood, but if the weather turns cold you can pause and go inside to warm up at almost any location on the route. When you are ready, pick up the game where you left off.
