À propos St. Andrew's Cathedral

St Andrew's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in the civic heart of Singapore, consecrated in 1862 and recognisable by its white walls and slim Gothic spire. It is the second church on this site and a National Monument, and it has stood through lightning strikes, convict-built construction and a wartime stint as a hospital.

The story behind it

The first church here was completed in 1836, but it did not last. Its spire was struck by lightning in 1845 and again in 1849, and the building was declared structurally unsafe in 1852. It was demolished in 1855 to make way for a new one.

The replacement was designed by Ronald MacPherson of the Madras Artillery, who took his inspiration from Netley Abbey, a ruined medieval church in Hampshire, England. Engineer John McNair supervised the work, which was carried out largely by Indian convict labourers, making it one of the last major buildings in Singapore raised with convict labour. The cathedral was consecrated in January 1862.

You will often hear that the glossy white walls are Madras chunam, a lime plaster said to include crushed shells, egg white and coconut husk. More recent research suggests a tight budget may have ruled that out, so treat the recipe as a good story rather than settled fact. In the days before the surrender of Singapore in the Second World War, the building served as an emergency hospital. It was gazetted a National Monument in 1973.

What to look for

  • The tall, slender spire is the cathedral's signature, and it is a fitting detail given the lightning that damaged the first church.
  • The white exterior walls have a smooth, pale finish that stands out against the glass towers around the cathedral.
  • The Gothic styling, with pointed arches and tall windows, echoes English medieval abbeys rather than anything built in Southeast Asia at the time.
  • The green lawn around the building gives you room to step back and see the whole cathedral against the modern skyline.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the cathedral and its grounds, longer if you go inside.
  • Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable in Singapore's heat, and the light on the white walls is softer.
  • It is a working place of worship, so check current opening hours and service times before planning to enter, and dress and behave respectfully.
  • The Padang, City Hall and the Raffles City area are a short walk away, so it fits easily into a wider stroll through the civic district.
