À propos Tórshavn Cathedral

Tórshavn Cathedral, called Havnar kirkja in Faroese, is the main church of Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, and the seat of the Faroese bishop. It is a small, plain church built in the late 18th century, set close to the old harbour quarter. It is also tied to local folklore about safety from ghosts, trolls and hidden people.

The story behind it

In Faroese tradition a church is a sacred place that shelters people from the supernatural. Trolls, ghosts and the hidden people were said to be deeply sensitive to the name of God and to holy ground, so anyone frightened by something unnatural headed for the church. Priests were believed to have special powers too. Like wizards, they were thought able to deal with the dead, send restless ghosts back to their graves and drive spirits out of houses.

Some stories add a darker twist. At certain churches, strange things were said to happen at night: odd noises, and grotesque creatures holding mock sermons that cursed the name of God. The moment the priest arrived, the noise stopped and the creatures vanished. These are legends, not history, but they show how much weight the church carried in everyday Faroese belief.

What to look for

  • The simple white walls and modest scale of the building, which feel far more intimate than a typical continental cathedral.
  • The churchyard and the approach from the town, where you can sense how close the church sits to the everyday life of the capital.
  • The contrast between the church and the colourful houses and the harbour around it, a good spot for a photo.
  • The calm of the surroundings, which suits the folklore of the place, especially in evening light or low cloud.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the church and its surroundings, longer if you combine it with the nearby old town and harbour.
  • Check current opening hours and whether visitors are welcome inside, as access can change around services and events.
  • Be respectful: this is a working church for the Faroese Lutheran community, so keep voices low and ask before taking photos inside.
  • Visit in soft morning or evening light, or in mist, for the best atmosphere.

See it on a quest

The cathedral is one stop on Ghosts of Thorshavn: The Lost Commandant, a self-guided walk through the capital. You reach it on foot as part of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about the place when you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. The ghostly theme fits a church that Faroese folklore treats as a refuge from spirits. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no set departure time.
