Richard III enthusiasts and English history fans can trace the king's story from Trinity Hospital past Leicester Castle, St Mary de Castro and Grey Friars to the Richard III Centre, cracking cryptic codes along the way. Day-trippers and locals get a 3 km medieval outing of about two hours, taken at their own pace. Anyone wanting a live guide to quiz, or lighter tales than dark legends and the Wars of the Roses, should choose something else.

Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts at Trinity Hospital and finishes at the Richard III Centre, so it does not return to the start. Along the way you pass stops including the Church of the Annunciation, Turret Gateway, Leicester Castle, the Guild Hall and Cathedral, Leicester Market and Grey Friars Friary.
How long does the Richard III walk take?
Most players take just under two hours, including walking and solving the puzzles. The route covers about 3 km through medieval Leicester. You can pause at any point and continue later if you want a break.
Can we play as a group?
Yes. One ticket covers the whole group playing together. The app guides you from stop to stop on a phone, telling the story of each place and setting a puzzle in what is in front of you, so there is no guide or group to join.
Do we need to book a start time?
No. You can start whenever suits you, with no fixed slot or tour group. The one recommendation is to play in daylight rather than at night. Note that some checkpoints may have temporary construction work.
Is it a good thing to do in Leicester in cold weather?
It is an outdoor walk through the city centre, but if it gets cold you can pause and go inside to warm up at almost any location on the route. Pick up where you left off whenever you are ready.
