Over Goethe Monument
The Goethe Monument in Frankfurt is a bronze statue honouring Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the poet and writer who was born in the city in 1749. It stands on Goetheplatz in the Innenstadt, a short walk from the busy centre, and is one of the city's best-known tributes to its most famous son.
The story behind it
Goethe is the writer most closely tied to Frankfurt's identity, and the city has long marked that bond in public space. The monument was designed by the Munich sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler and unveiled in 1844, at a time when admiration for Goethe had grown well beyond his hometown.
That date matters. In the nineteenth century the German-speaking lands were divided into many separate states, and Goethe's works were among the things that gave readers a sense of shared culture. A monument to him in his birth city was therefore as much a statement of cultural pride as a tribute to one man. Today it is part of the character of central Frankfurt and a natural starting point for following his story.
What to look for
- The bronze figure of Goethe himself, raised high on its pedestal so that it can be seen from across the square.
- The pedestal, where it is worth stepping closer to read the lettering and look at the decorative details beneath the statue.
- The contrast between the nineteenth-century bronze and the modern buildings around Goetheplatz, which shows how much the city has changed since 1844.
- The way the square connects to nearby shopping streets, so you can see how an old tribute sits inside a busy, present-day part of town.
Tips for your visit
- Allow ten to fifteen minutes to look at the statue and its surroundings; it is an outdoor monument, so there is nothing to enter.
- Visit in the morning or late afternoon for softer light on the bronze and fewer people in the square.
- Combine it with the Goethe House on Großer Hirschgraben, which is within easy walking distance. Check current opening hours before you go.
- The Hauptwache and the main shopping streets are close, so it fits easily into a walk through the centre.
