Over Samoil's Fortress
Samoil's Fortress is the hilltop citadel above the Old Town of Ohrid, North Macedonia, with long stone walls and towers that look out over Lake Ohrid. It is named after Tsar Samuel, the ruler who made Ohrid the centre of his state around the end of the 10th century, and it is the best place in the city for a wide view of the lake and the red roofs below.
The story behind it
The hill above Ohrid has been a natural place to defend for a very long time, and fortifications stood here well before the Middle Ages. The walls you see today are linked above all to the late 10th and early 11th centuries, when Samuel ruled from Ohrid and the city was the political and church centre of his realm. His rule ended in a long war with the Byzantine Empire, and Ohrid came under Byzantine control a few years after his death.
The fortress did not stop changing after that. Later rulers, including the Byzantines and the Ottomans, repaired and reshaped the defences, so the stonework is a layered mix of periods rather than a single build. In more recent times parts of the walls have been restored so visitors can walk along them again.
What to look for
- The long curtain walls and towers climbing the ridge, where you can see different kinds of masonry that hint at repairs across the centuries.
- The view from the ramparts over Lake Ohrid, with the Old Town spread out below and the far shore of the lake on a clear day.
- The spacious inner area of the fortress, which gives a sense of how much ground the defenders once held.
- The Old Town roofs and church domes below, including the Church of St. Clement and St. Panteleimon on its hill by the lake.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour to walk the walls and enjoy the views, a little more if you like to take photographs.
- Late afternoon is a good time, when the light softens over the lake and the stone turns warm. Midday in summer can be hot with little shade on top.
- Wear shoes with a good grip, as the paths and steps are uneven and the climb is steady.
- Check current opening hours and any entry arrangements before you go. The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid and the Old Town streets are close by, so it combines easily with a longer walk.
Explore it on a quest
The fortress is best understood together with the streets that climb to it. Discover Ohrid on foot with one of Questo's self-guided quests: see quests in Ohrid. The app takes you from place to place, tells you about each stop as you arrive and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you, with no guide and no group to join.
