Over deze quest

A Yale historian arrives in Washington with a single lead: a mysterious email pointing to a time capsule hidden somewhere on the Capitol grounds.

The trail follows Philip Reid, an enslaved man who helped raise the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol dome in 1863, and then disappeared from the historical record entirely.

Walk through the U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, the Botanic Garden, and a dozen landmarks woven into the history of American democracy and the people it failed. The answer you find at the end will be more personal than you expected.

Is dit iets voor jullie?

Voor wie het is

History-minded couples and families follow the trail of Philip Reid, the enslaved man who helped raise the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol dome in 1863, solving puzzles at the Supreme Court, Library of Congress and Botanic Garden along the way. If 4 km and well over two hours on foot is too much, or you would rather question a live guide, pick something shorter.

Veelgestelde vragen

Is the time capsule in this quest the one at the Washington Monument?
No. The story's time capsule is hidden somewhere on the Capitol grounds. A Yale historian follows a mysterious email lead, and the trail traces Philip Reid, the enslaved man who helped raise the Statue of Freedom on the Capitol dome in 1863 and then vanished from the record.
Does the walk pass the Supreme Court?
Yes. The Supreme Court of the United States is one of the stops. You reach it right after the United States Capitol and just before the Library of Congress, and the app tells the story of the building and sets a puzzle there.
Where does it start and finish?
It starts at Columbus Circle and finishes at the Robert A. Taft Memorial and Carillon, so it does not end where it began. In between you pass the National Japanese American Memorial, the Capitol, the Botanic Garden, the Grant Memorial, the Peace Monument and the Summerhouse, among other stops.
How long does it take, and can we pause?
Most players take about two and a quarter hours, walking and puzzles included, covering around 4 km. You can start whenever you like, pause partway, for example for a break, and continue later from where you stopped.
Can we play as a group, and do we need to book a time?
Yes, one ticket covers the whole group playing together on the route. There is no time slot to book and no group to join, so couples and families can start any time and move at their own pace around Capitol Hill.
