About Ancient Macedonian Theatre of Ohrid
The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid is a Hellenistic theatre in the Upper Town of Ohrid, North Macedonia, dating to around 200 BC. It is one of the best-preserved reminders of the ancient town of Lychnidos, and it still works as a stage for concerts and performances today.
The story behind it
Ohrid was known in antiquity as Lychnidos, a settlement on the shore of the lake in the Macedonian region. The theatre was built there in the Hellenistic period, with rows of seats set into the slope of the hill so that the audience looked out over the town and the water beyond.
When Roman rule reached the area, the building took on new uses. It is commonly described as a place for gladiator contests as well as drama, a change that reflects how the town's tastes and rulers shifted. In later centuries the theatre was built over and largely forgotten, and it is only in modern times that it has been uncovered, restored and returned to use as a performance space.
What to look for
- The curved rows of stone seating cut into the hillside, which show how the audience was arranged around the stage.
- The view from the upper rows across the rooftops of the old town toward Lake Ohrid, which explains why the site was chosen.
- The contrast between the original ancient stonework and the later repairs, which shows how the theatre has been preserved and reused.
- The setting between the Upper Town and the lower streets, where narrow lanes and old churches surround the ancient site.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the theatre itself, or longer if you want to sit and take in the view.
- Late afternoon is pleasant for soft light over the lake and cooler air in summer.
- Check current opening hours and access rules before you go, as they can change with the season and with events.
- Samuel's Fortress and several of Ohrid's old churches are within walking distance, so it combines well with a stroll through the Upper Town.
