About Church of Saint Sophia
The Church of Saint Sophia is an 11th-century Byzantine church in the old town of Ohrid, North Macedonia, and one of the most important medieval monuments in the country. It was the cathedral of the Archbishopric of Ohrid and is best known for its medieval frescoes and its remarkable acoustics.
The story behind it
The church is dedicated to Holy Wisdom, the same dedication as the great Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. It was built in the 11th century, after Ohrid became the seat of an archbishopric within the Byzantine Empire, and it served as the cathedral of that church. Its size and decoration reflect the status Ohrid held in the medieval Balkans.
In the 14th century a large outer narthex was added and decorated with more frescoes. After the Ottoman conquest the building was converted into a mosque, and the painted walls were covered over. Later restoration brought the church and its paintings back into view. Today it is valued as a monument and as a concert space, since its acoustics suit choral and classical music and it hosts performances during the summer festival season.
What to look for
- The 11th-century frescoes in the altar area, among the finest surviving Byzantine wall paintings in the region.
- The later narthex, where the painted decoration dates from a different century and has a different character to the older frescoes inside.
- The simple, solid exterior of stone and brick, which contrasts with the richly painted interior.
- The sound inside the nave: even a quiet voice carries, which explains why the church is used for concerts.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 30 to 45 minutes, longer if you want to study the frescoes closely.
- Check current opening hours and entry arrangements before you go, as they can change with the season and with events.
- Dress modestly, since the building is a historic place of worship and a monument.
- It sits close to the lakeshore and the old town, so combine it with the Ancient Theatre, the Upper Gate and the climb to Samuel's Fortress, or walk along the water toward Kaneo.
