We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Berlin

A school day with Questo in Berlin follows the story of a divided city on foot. Quests run through Mitte around Potsdamer Platz, Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and Gendarmenmarkt, along the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße, and into Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg. For Key Stage 3 classes, Greatest Escapes from East Berlin traces escapes across the Wall from Potsdamer Platz to Checkpoint Charlie, and Escape from Nazi Berlin follows the Blum family through Mitte. Younger pupils can walk the streets of 1989 in After the Wall, and sixth formers can solve Death in the Shadows near Gendarmenmarkt. Quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone.

    MoreLess

For under-14s, have one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; for 14 to 18, follow your school's policy.

  • Getting around

Classes up to grade 8 ride BVG and S-Bahn services on the VBB Gruppentageskarte für Schüler (€4 each, Berlin AB, minimum 10 pupils, one adult per 10).

    MoreLess

    Mitte is flat and walkable.

  • Toilets

Wall's automatic City-Toiletten stand on streets across the centre; many are free, others cost 50 cents by card or phone, not coins.

    MoreLess

Each takes one person at a time, so plan museum stops.

  • Lunch

The Tiergarten and the Lustgarten lawn beside Berlin Cathedral suit packed lunches.

    MoreLess

Keep away from the Holocaust Memorial for eating: climbing and jumping on its stelae is forbidden and guards patrol.

  • Wet weather

The Topography of Terror (free, daily 10am to 8pm) and the Tränenpalast at Friedrichstraße station (free) suit groups.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Berlin's cycle lanes often run along the pavement, marked red, green or barely at all, and pupils drift into them. Remind teams not to stop in them when huddling over the phone.

What they learn

History

The Cold War and the divided city, from the building of the Berlin Wall to its fall in 1989, through escape stories, Checkpoint Charlie, a GDR watchtower, the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße and the Platz des 9. November 1989.

Geography

Urban geography of a capital city, comparing Mitte, Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg; tracing where the border once ran through streets, a tunnel and footbridges; map reading and orientation on routes of 2.3 to 5.7 km.

Languages

Greatest Escapes from East Berlin can be played in German, French, Spanish, Dutch or Italian, and the Blum family quest in German, French or Dutch, so a language class can read every instruction and story in the language it studies. Other quests offer English and German.

Citizenship

Democracy, dictatorship and freedom of movement, with stops at Berlin's state parliament (Abgeordnetenhaus) and the Bavarian state representation, and memorials that show how a city remembers its past.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Berlin

Which Berlin quest suits which age group?
For ages 8 to 11, try After the Wall, the Kreuzberg Secret Society quest or Secrets of Berlin: A Spy Mission. For 11 to 14, Greatest Escapes from East Berlin, Escape from Nazi Berlin and Secrets Beneath The Wall work well. For 14 to 18, Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows suits sixth form and older Key Stage 4 groups.
How long does a quest take?
The shorter Mitte quests take about 50 to 90 minutes: the Blum family quest about 50 minutes and Greatest Escapes about 70. The longer district walks for younger pupils, such as Kreuzberg and After the Wall, take close to three hours, so plan snack and toilet breaks. Every quest can be paused and continued.
How many pupils share a phone?
Three to five pupils share one phone, which can be a teacher's or a pupil's. For a class of 30, that means six to ten phones. Teams can start a few minutes apart so they do not all arrive at the same stop together.
Where do we start?
Each quest has its own start point. Greatest Escapes from East Berlin starts at S+U Potsdamer Platz on the Leipziger Platz side, the Christmas Treasure Hunt starts at Brandenburg Gate, and the murder mystery starts at the Schillerdenkmal. There is no booking slot, so you start whenever your class is ready.
How much does it cost?
It costs 5 euros per pupil, so a class of 30 costs 150 euros. Teachers and chaperones are free. Schools can pay by card or invoice, and a teacher can preview the quest free from home before the trip.
What happens if it rains?
Pause the quest and go indoors. The Topography of Terror documentation centre is free, open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 and needs no booking. If the weather spoils the whole day, your class can replay the quest free within 30 days.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on the hotel or school wifi. For international groups, downloading in advance avoids roaming problems, and a charged phone or power bank per team helps on the longer routes.
