Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Dresden

A school day with Questo in Dresden takes place in the baroque Altstadt on the south bank of the Elbe, with one short crossing of the Augustusbrücke to the Goldener Reiter. The one school-ready quest, Dresden’s Royal Ghost: The Legacy of August the Strong, starts at the Neues Rathaus. It follows the Saxon ruler’s ghost through 15 stops in about two hours, including the Canaletto view, the Cathedral, the Semperoper, the Zwinger’s Crown Gate, the Residenzschloss, the Fürstenzug and the Coselpalais, and finishes at the Frauenkirche. Because of its ghost theme it suits pupils aged 14 to 18 (Key Stage 4 and sixth form). It plays in English or German.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s: one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18 per school policy. In Advent, avoid checkpoints on the crowded Altmarkt.

  • Getting around

The VVO SchülergruppenTicket covers DVB trams, buses and ferries all day for groups of 15 or more, including two adults (three from 25), at 1.30 euros each.

    MoreLess

The Altstadt is compact and walkable.

  • Toilets

Most public toilets in the Altstadt cost 0.50 to 1 euro and sit near the Frauenkirche, Zwinger, Semperoper and Brühlsche Terrasse.

    MoreLess

The city is adding free accessible units; cafes and museums are fallbacks.

  • Lunch

Picnicking is banned on the Brühlsche Terrasse, so plan packed lunches in the Großer Garten, the city's largest park, or on the Elbe meadows, away from monuments.

  • Wet weather

The Zentralbibliothek in the Kulturpalast is free to enter and the Stadtmuseum is free on Friday afternoons.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, the quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Riverside paths are part of the busy Elberadweg, shared with fast cyclists and inline skaters, and police report too many accidents there in summer. Keep teams to the edge and together.

What they learn

History

Baroque Saxony and the court of August the Strong. The stops include the Goldener Reiter, the Zwinger, the Residenzschloss, the Coselpalais and the statue of Friedrich August II, so pupils can follow the rulers and the buildings they left behind.

Geography

Urban geography of a river city, covering about 3.3 km of the Altstadt with a crossing of the Elbe on the Augustusbrücke. Pupils navigate between 15 stops and orient themselves using landmarks and the map.

Modern foreign languages

The quest is available in German as well as English, so German classes can read the story and solve the puzzles in German.

Citizenship and teamwork

Teams share one phone, divide roles such as navigator, reader and puzzle-solver, make decisions together, and behave appropriately in busy public squares and at a place of worship.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Dresden

Which age group is the Dresden quest suitable for?
Dresden’s Royal Ghost: The Legacy of August the Strong is set for pupils aged 14 to 18, roughly Key Stage 4 and sixth form. It has a ghost theme, and the puzzles and history suit older pupils. It is rated 4.6 out of 5 from 24 ratings.
How long does the quest take and how far do pupils walk?
Allow about two hours for 15 stops and about 3.3 km of walking, mostly in the compact Altstadt with one crossing of the Augustusbrücke. With staggered starts, a toilet stop and a short pause, plan for around two and a half hours before lunch.
How many pupils share a phone?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, which can be a teacher's phone or a pupil's. A class of 30 therefore needs 6 to 10 phones. Teams can start a few minutes apart so they do not crowd the same stop.
Where does the quest start and how do we get there?
It starts at the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall). From Dresden Hauptbahnhof, trams 3 and 7 go to Pirnaischer Platz, the stop for the Rathaus. Check the DVB website before travelling, as track works at Pirnaischer Platz are listed. The quest finishes at the Frauenkirche on the Neumarkt.
How much does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and no attraction tickets are needed for the route. You can also preview the quest free from home before the trip to plan meeting points.
What happens if it rains?
Teams can pause and go inside to warm up at most stops, then carry on. The Frauenkirche is free to enter in open-church hours, and the Altmarkt-Galerie is covered. If the weather ruins the day, you can replay free within 30 days.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
No pupil accounts are needed. Each team's phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on Wi-Fi. For visiting groups, downloading at the hotel or at school saves worries about roaming.
