Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Naples

A school day with Questo in Naples is spent on foot in the old centre around Via dei Tribunali and Via San Gregorio Armeno, the Spanish Quarter off Via Toledo, the market district by Piazza Mercato and the royal streets near Castel Nuovo. For Key Stage 2, Old Town Naples: The Story of Real Pizza starts at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele and follows the city's historic pizzerias. In search of "Cazzimma" through Naples loops from Via San Gregorio Armeno past the Maradona mural and Toledo metro station. Older pupils can take Haunted Naples: The Alchemist Prince to Cappella Sansevero and Napoli Sotterranea. The quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

For under-14s, one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18 per school policy. Spaccanapoli's narrow lanes split groups quickly.

  • Getting around

    The centre is walkable.

    MoreLess

ANM runs Metro Line 1 and four funiculars; each pupil needs a ticket (€1.50 metro single, €4.50 ANM day pass) unless ANM confirms a group fare.

  • Toilets

    Public toilets are scarce.

    MoreLess

Paid options include Se ti scappa on Via Atri (€1) and Napoli Centrale (€1); otherwise use museums or buy something in a bar or cafe. Carry coins.

  • Lunch

Classes eat packed lunches on the Lungomare Caracciolo seafront or in the Villa Comunale park beside it.

    MoreLess

Keep off church steps and fountains, and take all litter away.

  • Wet weather

Galleria Umberto I is covered and free at all hours, and the Archaeological Museum is free for under-18s (closed Tuesdays).

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Scooters squeeze through Spaccanapoli's narrow lanes, and phone snatching from scooters happens near the kerb. Hold the team phone away from the road; keep bags zipped around Piazza Garibaldi.

What they learn

History

Greek and Roman Neapolis beneath the streets (Napoli Sotterranea), medieval and royal Naples at Castel Nuovo, the Royal Palace, Castel Capuano, the Duomo and San Lorenzo Maggiore, and Baroque churches and spires such as Gesu Nuovo and the Guglia dell'Immacolata.

Geography

The urban geography of a dense historic city, comparing the old centre, the Spanish Quarter, the market district around Piazza Mercato and Porta Nolana, and the royal waterfront. Pupils follow a route, read street names and orient themselves between squares and metro stations.

English and Modern Languages

Pupils read and act on written instructions in English. Italian classes can play the Pizza, Cazzimma, Haunted Naples and Death in the Shadows quests in Italian and meet Neapolitan words such as cazzimma.

Citizenship and teamwork

Teams share roles (navigator, reader, puzzle solver), make decisions together and keep to agreed checkpoints. Older pupils discuss organised crime and the legal economy on Curse of Naples: Mafia Secrets.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Naples

Which Naples quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11), choose Old Town Naples: The Story of Real Pizza or In search of "Cazzimma" through Naples. The Cazzimma title is a Neapolitan slang word, so preview it at home first. For ages 14 to 18, choose Haunted Naples, Legacy of the Cursed Egg, Curse of Naples: Mafia Secrets or Death in the Shadows.
How long does a quest take and how far do pupils walk?
Most Naples quests take about 1 hour 30 minutes and cover 2 to 3.7 km. The pizza quest is the longest at about 1 hour 45 minutes over 3.3 km. With a lunch break, two quests fit comfortably into a school day, or one quest plus a museum visit.
How many pupils share a phone, and do they need accounts or data?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, either a teacher's or a pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand, and a full battery or a power bank.
Where do the quests start and how do we get there?
The pizza quest starts at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele, a short walk from Napoli Centrale. Legacy of the Cursed Egg starts at Porta Capuana, about 10 minutes on foot from Piazza Garibaldi. Cazzimma starts on Via San Gregorio Armeno and Haunted Naples at Santa Luciella ai Librai, both in the old centre near Line 1.
How much does it cost?
5 euros per pupil, and teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or invoice. There is no guide and no booking slot, so teams start whenever you are ready. Staff can preview the quest from home for free before the trip.
What happens if it rains?
Teams can pause and continue later, and if the weather ruins the day you can replay free within 30 days. The National Archaeological Museum on Piazza Museo is a good indoor fallback: free for under-18s, but school groups must book in advance and it closes on Tuesdays.
Where can pupils use the toilet?
Public toilets are scarce in Naples. Napoli Centrale has toilets for 1 euro, and Se ti scappa at Via Atri 32, near Via San Gregorio Armeno, also charges 1 euro. Bring coins and build a toilet stop into your timings before each quest.
