We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.
Perfect with a group of A Level pupils. Loved it.
Quests for classes
A school day in Rome with Questo moves through three layers: the ancient core around the Colosseum and the Imperial Fora, the Baroque squares of Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and the Vatican and Castel Sant'Angelo across the Tiber. For Key Stage 3, Gladiators of Rome and Mysterious Rome: The Emperor's Dream are strong choices; Angels & Demons of Rome: Illuminati Plot is the most widely played, linking Piazza della Repubblica to St Peter's Square. Younger pupils can explore Trastevere's lanes or play an art heist inside the Vatican Museums; older pupils can take on The Disciples of Blood mysteries. Quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone; for under-14s, one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints in named piazzas; 14 to 18 per your school's policy.
ATAC runs Rome's buses, trams and metro; each person needs a BIT ticket (€1.50, 100 minutes, one metro ride), validated on boarding.
The centre is compact, so classes mostly walk between sights.
Public toilets are scarce; the paid P.Stop units (€1) near Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona and in Trastevere are the main options.
Otherwise use museums, Termini station (€1) or a bar after buying something.
Take packed lunches to Villa Borghese or the Pincio terrace, a short walk from the top of the Spanish Steps.
Eating, drinking or sitting on the Spanish Steps is banned, with fines of €250 to €400.
The Pantheon is free for under-18s with a booked slot; big churches such as Santa Maria sopra Minerva are free.
If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.
Caution: Pickpockets work the crowds at the Trevi Fountain, Termini station and on bus 64. Teams should keep the shared phone in a front pocket and avoid holding it out for photos.
The Colosseum and gladiators, the Arch of Constantine, the Imperial Fora and the statue of Julius Caesar, the temple remains at Largo di Torre Argentina, the Pantheon, the Temple of Hadrian, the Mausoleum of Augustus and Castel Sant'Angelo.
Map reading and orientation in a dense historic centre, crossing the Tiber at Ponte Sant'Angelo, Ponte Umberto I and Ponte Fabricio, the gates between Rome and Vatican City (Porta Angelica, Porta Sant'Anna), and historic cartography in the Gallery of Maps.
Close reading of written clues and directions. Several quests can be played in other languages: Angels & Demons in French, German, Spanish and Italian, the Trastevere quest in French, German, Spanish and Italian, and the Vatican Museums quest in Italian.
Sharing roles in a team with one phone, decision-making under time pressure, road safety in a busy city, and, in Garbatella, a mural of Article 2 of the Italian Constitution.

In short
A school trip to Rome with Questo is a self-guided city quest. Pupils in teams of 3 to 5 follow a route of 9 to 15 stops on foot, solving a puzzle at each, in 50 to 150 minutes. 14 quests suit classes aged 8 to 18. There is no guide and no time slot: the class starts when it arrives. The price is €5 per pupil, and teachers play free.
Pupils are an estimate: groups of four or more teams starting one quest together, at about four pupils a team, across all cities since 2018. Ratings are from players of these quests.
In a randomised study of 10,912 students, a single cultural trip raised critical thinking, tolerance and interest in culture weeks later.
458 Amsterdam pupils walked the medieval city in teams, solving tasks on phones at real locations. They learned more than classmates taught the same topic in lessons.

Across hundreds of studies, game-based learning beats non-game teaching on knowledge and retention; story and playing together are what make the difference.
