Über Sacromonte Abbey
Sacromonte Abbey (Abadía del Sacromonte) is a 17th-century Catholic abbey on the hill above the Darro valley in Granada, Spain. It was founded after the discovery of mysterious relics and engraved lead tablets in nearby caves, and it still holds the Holy Caves, the abbey museum and a view across to the Alhambra.
The story behind it
The abbey grew out of a strange episode in Granada's history. In the 1590s, workers and local clerics reported finding bones and inscribed lead plates in caves on this hillside. These were presented as the remains and writings of early Christian martyrs, among them Saint Cecilius, who is regarded as the patron saint of Granada. The finds stirred great devotion in the city, and the hillside came to be called Sacromonte, the Holy Mount.
Archbishop Pedro de Castro, a keen supporter of the discoveries, founded the abbey in the early 1600s to guard the caves and the relics. The lead books themselves later became controversial. The Church eventually judged them to be forgeries, yet the abbey stayed a place of pilgrimage and learning, and it kept a college and a library alongside the sacred caves. Today the story of the lead books is one of the most curious tales of Granada.
What to look for
- The whitewashed complex stands out on the slope of the hill, and its position makes clear why it was meant to watch over the city below.
- The Holy Caves are a set of passages and chapels dug into the rock, tied directly to the legend of the martyrs and the lead tablets.
- The abbey's museum and collegiate church show how the story of the relics shaped religious life in Granada.
- Look back from the approach road toward the Alhambra and the Albaicín, which face the hill across the valley.
Tips for your visit
- The walk up the Camino del Sacromonte is steep and often sunny, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
- Late afternoon is a good time for softer light on the Alhambra view, but check current opening hours and whether a ticket or guided visit is needed before you set out.
- Allow about an hour for the abbey itself, more if you want to wander the surrounding lanes.
- The Sacromonte neighbourhood is close by, known for its cave houses and flamenco tradition, so it is easy to combine both in one outing.
