À propos Delft Windmill de Roos
Molen de Roos (Windmill the Rose) is a working windmill in the Dutch city of Delft, on Phoenixstraat. It is one of the few mills still standing in a city that once had many, and it still grinds grain today. It is a quick and rewarding stop for anyone interested in how Delft fed itself.
The story behind it
Windmills are among the best-known symbols of the Netherlands, and Delft once had a good number of them. De Roos stands where one of the old city walls used to run, and it replaced an earlier wooden mill that is said to have stood here since the 1500s. That gives the mill a place in the story of the town's defences as well as its trades.
This was a mill for grinding, not just for show. It produced flour for bakers and townspeople, ground barley for the brewers, and prepared animal feed for farmers in the surrounding area. Brewing was a major trade in Delft, so a mill like this mattered to daily life. Since 2015 the mill has been grinding organic grain again, for private customers, bakers and the catering trade.
What to look for
- The tall tower with its sails, which rises above the surrounding houses and canal-side streets and is easy to spot from a distance.
- The way the mill sits right in the neighbourhood, which shows that it was once part of the working edge of the city and not a country landmark.
- The sails turning when the wind is up, which is when the place feels most alive.
- Any signs of the milling work today, such as sacks of flour and grain, which show that this is a working building and not a museum piece.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 15 to 20 minutes to walk around the outside and take photos. Check current opening hours and whether visits inside or flour sales are available before you go.
- Go on a clear day with some wind if you can, and try the late afternoon, when the light is warm on the brickwork.
- The mill is a short walk from the old centre of Delft, so it combines easily with the canals, the market square and the town's other landmarks.
- Streets around the mill are quiet and residential, so it works well as a calm break from the busier central squares.
